Ed was a 4-year starting setter and letterman at UCLA, winning the first two NCAA Men’s National Volleyball Championships and earning All-American honors his senior year. That same year he was elected captain of the NCAA All-Star team that placed 3rd in the US Open. After graduating Cum Laude in 1971, he was awarded a NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, the first in UCLA volleyball history. While at UCLA, Ed spent hours watching John Wooden run basketball practices in Pauley Pavilion and win five National Championships, and he became a staunch disciple of his teachings. Ed began his 35-year coaching career at UCLA, serving two years as an assistant under legend Al Scates, winning two more NCAA titles.
After playing with the USA National Team in 1974, Ed was hired as the Head Men’s Coach at San Diego State University. Moving out of the competitive arena, Ed worked for a dozen years as a Physical Education Instructor at UCSD, teaching more than 5,000 students how to play volleyball. While at UCSD, Ed won another National Championship in the Master’s Division at the 1985 U.S. Open.
Ed founded the Encinitas Volleyball Club in 1999. Nine of his teams have qualified for the Junior Olympics, and the Encinitas 15’s won the Club National Championship in 2004. He has served as the Head Varsity Girl’s Coach at La Costa Canyon for the past four years, winning the last three C.I.F. Division 1 Championships and earning 2005 Coach-of-the-Year honors from the North County Times. In addition, in his only year at Torrey Pines High School, he led the Falcons to their first girl’s C.I.F. Championship in 1981. A multi-sport enthusiast, Ed has also won National Championships in sailing and surfing.
